Ahmedabad University established the Centre for Inter-Asian Research (CIAR) to bring together scholars and practitioners to work towards imagining what the inter-Asian century might be like, through re-imagining political and economic structures, and experimenting with diverse artistic forms.

We have been discussing as to how this Centre should evolve and play a broader role given the changes happening in the world, especially, technologically, geopolitically, geo-economically, and to consider aspects of the climate crisis. It became clear that, while we wish to remain involved with Asia and particularly in terms of India’s own relationship with Asia and its challenges and opportunities, it also became important to understand, thematically, how certain issues (for instance, migration or security or the development of AI) cut across Asian boundaries in terms of how they play out socially, politically, and economically.

This next evolution is the Stepwell Centre for Asian Futures.

Equally, we wish to preserve and share the excellent work done by CIAR. This remains available as an open archive for academicians, practitioners, researchers, and the world at large.
