Printmaking is creating a sustained artistic dialogue between India and Japan, bringing artists from two distinct cultural and artistic traditions together through a shared visual language.
Koustav Nag, Assistant Professor at Ahmedabad University and founder of Graph Initiative, an Indian printmaking collective, is contributing to this exchange through the India–Japan Print Exchange Project.
Initiated at the Japan Foundation, New Delhi, in February 2025, the project brings together Graph Initiative and the Japan Committee of the International Mokuhanga Conference. Since its launch, the exhibition has travelled across India and Japan, creating opportunities for artists from both countries to engage with each other’s practices, techniques, and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the project continues this exchange with an exhibition in Echizen City, Japan, in collaboration with Graph Initiative and Studio Printmaking India.
Through Graph Initiative and the India–Japan Print Exchange Project, Professor Nag is helping create a sustained platform for artistic exchange between India and Japan. His work uses printmaking not only as an artistic practice, but also as a medium for cultural dialogue, collaboration, and shared learning.
