Abdul Khalik is a doctoral candidate at the division of Biological and Life Sciences, School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the aging and weathering of microplastics, and their fate in aquatic environments. The study of microplastics seeks to improve the accuracy of ecological and human health risk assessment, and to develop solutions. His work seeks to estimate the concentration and types of microplastics present in freshwater ecosystems in Ahmedabad, their effects at organismal level, and their biomagnification potential in living aquatic organisms using brine shrimp, paramecium, and zebrafish as model organisms. Additionally, he is also working towards developing approaches to remove microplastics completely/ partially from the aquatic system.
