Consider a finite abelian group G (written additively). A sequence S = g over 1 ·...· g l G is called a zero-sum sequence if g where is the identity element of the group. 1 +···+ g l = 0, 0. Inspired by a well known result of Erdős, Ginzburg and Ziv, the area of zero-sum theorems in combinatorial number theory has seen a rapid growth in recent years, producing many interesting results as well as several open questions. Several authors have introduced interesting elementary algebraic techniques to deal with these problems. In this talk, we describe some applications of results from set addition to both classical and weighted generalizations in zero-sum combinatorics.
Professor Sukumar Das Adhikari is a distinguished Indian mathematician currently serving as Professor and Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math. He previously held key leadership roles at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) in Prayagraj, including Professor I, Dean of Academics (2009–2011), and Dean of Administration (2011–2017). A Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), he received the M.K. Singhal Memorial Award (2013–2014) and the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) Distinguished Faculty Award (2015). His primary research interests lie in Number Theory and Combinatorics, particularly in zero-sum problems and additive number theory. Beyond his research, he has served the national mathematical community extensively as President of the Indian Mathematical Society (2022–2023) and as a member of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) from 2011 to 2022.
