Exploring Theatre Performance

A THREE-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP with veteran Theatre Director Sunil Shanbag

Effective theatre performance rests upon a foundation of a sharp understanding of the self, and the world we live in. This calls upon imagination, observation, physical alertness, intellectual resources, analysis, deep compassion and empathy. In many ways theatre mirrors life in exciting and unique ways, allowing an understanding of self and the world in a safe and healthy way.

The workshop is designed as an introduction to the world of theatre performance. Using a variety of theatre games, exercises, improvisations, and texts (Hindi and English), participants will be guided through the fundamentals of theatre performance. The teaching approach is inspirational, and philosophical, with emphasis on practical work.

Attendance for all three days required. All attendees will recieve a certificate.

Sunil Shanbag is one of India’s leading theatre directors and the artistic director of Theatre Arpana, and Tamaasha Theatre. Over the past 40 years, Sunil’s work across various genres of theatre practice has been engaging with and presenting the complex nature of contemporary India, on stage as well as in various alternative performance spaces. His work is seen at major theatre festivals across the country, and has also been presented over two seasons at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre in London. He has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for theatre direction, 2017.
