Abstract: One of the common challenges of the aging society in the developed countries is the shortage of caregiver as many of the young adults are reluctant to take up the career of being a professional full-timecaregiver to the elderly. This causes nursing home for the elderly to be too expensive and beyond the reach for the ordinary general public. One promising candidate to alleviate the anticipated shortage of nursing home in the near future is ambient assisted living. The first part of this talk will cover some of the recent research activities in using computer vision and video analytics technologies in ambient assisted living. In particular, the speaker will share his research experience in vision based human fall detection and dining activities detection at home using surveillance camera and Microsoft Kinect. Some possible future research directions and topics in vision based ambient assisted living will also be discussed. The second part of this talk will briefly touch on multimedia transmission over 5G cognitive radio.
