School of Engineering and Applied Science

Our student-centric pedagogy, project-based approach, and a design-driven curriculum are meant to give graduates an aptitude for complex problem solving, design and innovation, and lifelong learning.

Sunil Kale

Dean
School of Engineering and Applied Science

Professor Kale has over 30 years of experience in teaching and research in mechanical engineering with a specialisation in thermo-fluids. He holds a BTech degree from IIT Delhi (1977), and MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University (1981 and 1984 respectively). He has taught at IIT Delhi since 1989 where he was the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Our engineering education aims to prepare graduates for a complex, multi-disciplinary world that has to tackle challenges ranging from climate change to public health, from water to sanitation. And that’s why, design thinking and creativity are integral to the programmes.

The School infrastructure includes well-equipped air conditioned class rooms, and laboratories. Manufacturing and fabrication facilities are available in a well-equipped workshop.

The Bachelor of Technology curriculum builds on the University Foundation Course and General Educational Requirements with a broad base in engineering courses via the Engineering Foundation. These courses reflect the current and emerging trends in engineering and form the basis for inter-disciplinary work. The engineering curriculum emphasises:

  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Broad exposure to the basic courses of the Programme
  • Interdisciplinary depth with courses from several engineering disciplines
  • Imparting soft skills - technical communication, for instance
  • Exposure to formulating and solving problems
  • Hands-on work in courses, laboratory work, and projects

Our collaborations with foreign universities enable students to study abroad through student exchange programmes. To ensure the best exposure to our students, we have facilitated the creation of strong Student Chapters of several professional societies, and we also facilitate visits to industries.

Several engineering alumni have pursued/are pursuing higher education at highly-ranked institutions in India and abroad:
