Profile

Professor Urmi Nanda Biswas is an applied social psychologist, with a focus on health, gender, and workplace behaviour. She has over 25 years of postgraduate teaching and research experience. Before joining Ahmedabad University, she worked as a Professor and Head of Department of Psychology in the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara. 

She has undertaken multiple research projects around health issues among adolescent girls, reproductive health, female feticide, gender equality as an attractive value at work place, and workplace challenges of Indian women. Her ongoing project ‘Understanding the Vulnerabilities of Indian Female Migrants during COVID 19 Pandemic: Rethinking Policies for Better Integration of Immigrant Women’s Work Lives’ seeks to uncover aspirations of young educated Indian women.

Professor Biswas consistently explores the social psychology of health in the social rubric and context of India. She has spent a significant amount of time studying the impact of holistic wellbeing practices in people living with people living with HIV/AIDS. Her clinical research led to a professional certificate course on mental health at Roehampton University where she trained mental health professionals in the community. 

Her most recent research to understand value-integrated and sustainable elder care models across different social and economic contexts has further pushed her to work in the field of geriatric care and gerontology.

Professor Biswas is an editor of national and international journals of psychology such as Psychological Studies, Indian Journal of Health Studies, and is a reviewer for several international journals. Additionally, as a trained I/O psychologist she actively consults with organisations as an external expert for exit interviews and executive interviews.
